Two Bangladeshi nationals were injured after members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly opened fire near the Basantapur border area in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on June 3 along the Kalindi River, a border area between Bangladesh and India.
The injured individuals were identified as Md. Mohiuddin, 42, and Md. Shahin, 28, both residents of Kaliganj upazila. According to police and local sources, the two men had reportedly entered India illegally about a year ago and had been working as construction laborers in Tamil Nadu after traveling through Howrah, Kolkata.
Authorities said the pair were attempting to return to Bangladesh through an unauthorized route by swimming across the Kalindi River near the Bashjharia area of the Basantapur border when BSF personnel allegedly fired at them.
Local residents rescued the injured men and took them to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of their injuries, doctors later referred them to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jewel Hossain said preliminary findings indicate that the victims had entered India illegally and were shot while attempting to return to Bangladesh through the same route. Police have visited the scene, and both victims remain in serious condition.
