Body of teenager found in Ishwardi after two years of disappearance

Police have recovered the body of a teenager named Ruhul Amin (15) from Ishwardi, Pabna, after he had been missing for two years. He died after being admitted to the Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex for two days after falling ill. It is initially believed that he may have died due to excessive drug addiction.

The deceased, Ruhul Amin, was the son of Saidul Islam of Gachpara village in Pabna Sadar upazila. He was buried at his village graveyard after the funeral prayer at around 2:30 pm on Sunday.

Earlier on Friday night, family members identified the unidentified body after seeing a photo of it on Facebook. Later, the body was handed over to the family after completing the legal process.

The deceased’s cousin Mohammad Sajib Hossain said that Ruhul ran away from home in early 2024 due to various family reasons. After that, the family members began searching for him at various railway stations between Dhaka and Rajshahi. At one stage, they found out that he was at Ishwardi Railway Station. Later, he was rescued from drug-addicted teenagers at the station and brought back home.

After being normal for a few days, Ruhul ran away from home again without the knowledge of his family. After that, he started hanging out with homeless and drug-addicted teenagers in and around Ishwardi Railway Station. The family claims that at that time he got involved in various addictions including dandy. Despite searching the station and surrounding areas at various times, the family could not find him.

Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex sources said that a local man admitted Ruhul Amin to the hospital while he was ill. He died after being treated there for two days. Later, the hospital authorities informed the police about the matter. Till then, no trace of his family has been found.

Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashadur Rahman said, a local man admitted the teenager to the hospital in an unwell condition. After two days of treatment, the hospital informed the police that he died. Later, an autopsy and post-mortem were conducted.

He said, a campaign was launched through the police and the media to identify the body. Later, a relative of the deceased contacted the police after seeing the picture of the body on Facebook. After the identity was confirmed, the body was handed over to the family.

Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hasan Mohammad Shoaib said, the number of uprooted children has been increasing in Ishwardi for a long time. Many of them are getting involved in various types of addictions. The matter has been informed to the police and railway police in the law and order meeting. However, since the age of these children is usually between 12 and 15 years, there are some complications in taking action against them through mobile courts. Even then, the administration is looking into what kind of effective action can be taken for them.
