Humayun Kabir becomes State Minister from Foreign Affairs Advisor

Humayun Kabir, a prominent son of Osmaninagar in Sylhet, has emerged into the spotlight after making one surprise after another in Sylhet-2 constituency and national politics. After serving as the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, he has now created new history by taking oath as a State Minister in the government.

After the presidential oath-taking ceremony on Friday evening, the new president administered the oath to the new cabinet members. On this day, in addition to Humayun Kabir, five ministers and state ministers took the oath.

After independence, no BNP leader got a place in the cabinet from Sylhet-2 constituency. This time, the wait ended with Humayun Kabir taking oath as the state minister. Earlier, Awami League leader and commander-in-chief of the Liberation War, MAG Osmani, got a ministry from this constituency. Besides, after the controversial ‘Ami-Dummy’ election, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury served as the state minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

When news of Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir becoming a Minister of State spread, his followers and supporters held joyous processions, distributed sweets and expressed excitement in various areas of Sylhet, including Osmaninagar and Bishwanath in Sylhet-2 constituency.

Humayun Kabir, a prominent citizen of Habspur village in Umarpur union of Osmaninagar upazila, migrated to the UK as a child and pursued higher education from renowned educational institutions in the UK. He studied at the University of Sussex, London School of Economics (LSE), Cambridge and Leeds Universities.

During his professional career, he gained experience working in the UK Cabinet Office. He served in the British Cabinet Office under former Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak.

During his stay in the UK, Humayun Kabir gained experience in international politics, administration and policy-making, as well as working closely with the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. His important role in the party’s international communications and diplomatic activities gradually strengthened his position in the policy-making level of the BNP.

After the fall of the Awami League government in the July-August 2024 mass uprising, he returned to the country in November and joined active politics. Although he was active in the field as a BNP candidate in the Sylhet-2 constituency, he focused on organizational activities, showing loyalty to the party’s decisions. On October 22, 2025, he took charge as the Joint Secretary General (International Affairs) of BNP.

After the BNP government came to power, rumors of Humayun Kabir’s inclusion in the cabinet began. Later, he served as an advisor to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the Foreign Ministry, Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, and the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry with the rank of State Minister.

Another important chapter has been added to Humayun Kabir’s political rise with his latest swearing-in as a Minister of State. On this day, apart from Humayun Kabir, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Barrister Andalib Rahman Partha and Saching Pru Jerry took oath as ministers. And Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln took oath as a Minister of State.

A new chapter in Humayun Kabir’s political career has been added by becoming a cabinet member, with his rise to important positions in national politics, including the Sylhet-2 constituency.
