Georgia will not join EU sanctions on Iran

Georgia has decided not to join the European Union’s latest sanctions on Iran, saying any action it takes in international politics is determined by national interests.

The Georgian news agency InterpressNews (IPN) reported this information.

Tengiz Sharmanashvili, a member of parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, said his country would not support any policies that conflict with Georgia’s national priorities.

He said, “The only criterion for determining whether Georgia will join a proposal or take any action related to international politics is whether the matter is in Georgia’s interest at that moment.”

Sharmanashvili also said that if a decision goes against Georgia’s interests, Georgia has “absolutely no worries” about whose interests it will serve later.

Georgia’s stance comes in the context of the European Union’s latest sanctions against Iran. Rather than joining the EU sanctions, Tbilisi has decided to prioritize its own national interests.

According to the ruling party MP, Georgia’s participation in any international decision or policy will depend on the country’s own interests. The interests of any other country or international pressure will not be the main basis for making decisions in this regard.
