Retired army officer Hafizur Rahman, who was arrested in the murder case of Sohagi Jahan alias Tonu, a student of Comilla Victoria Government College, has been produced in court. He is currently in Comilla Central Jail after being arrested in the Tonu murder case.
Hafizur Rahman was produced before the court of Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate No. 1 Amli Court Judge Md. Mominul Haque at around 11 am on Monday. The case was scheduled for June 8, said Inspector Tariqul Islam of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the investigation officer of the case. However, no bail application was filed on behalf of Hafizur Rahman even though he was produced in court today.
Earlier on April 22, Md. Mominul Haque’s court produced the investigation officer of the case, Police Inspector Md. Tariqul Islam Hafizur, and applied for a seven-day remand. Later, after the hearing, the court granted the soldier a three-day remand. After that, he was taken to the special unit of the PBI in Kalyanpur in the capital and interrogated. When he was finally produced before the Comilla court on April 25, the court ordered him to be sent to the Comilla Central Jail. Since then, he has been in the Comilla Central Jail.
The investigation officer of the case, PBI Inspector Md. Tariqul Islam, told Prothom Alo that the date of the case was fixed today. For this, retired army member Hafizur Rahman was produced. Later, the court ordered to send him back to Comilla Central Jail. This is the regular process of the case. And the results of Hafizur’s DNA sample test have not been received yet. Once they are received, the next process will begin. Apart from this, efforts are being made to bring other suspected accused under the law.
On the evening of March 20, 2016, Tonu went to a house inside the Comilla Cantonment to give tuition and never returned home. Later, during a search, her body was found in a bush near the cantonment’s power house.
