A woman was allegedly tied to an electric pole and beaten in the Uttar Palong area of Shariatpur Municipality. Before being tied to the pole, her hair was cut, her face was painted with ink and a chain of shoes was tied around her neck. The incident took place around 11 am on Saturday. Police rescued the woman and admitted her to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Talking to the police of Palang Model Police Station in Shariatpur Sadar and local people, it was learned that the wife (37) of an expatriate from Shariatpur Municipality lives in the house with her children. She had lent money to the family of Delwar Kotari and some local people in the area. The housewife started a dispute with them over the repayment of the loan.
Yesterday morning, Delwar Kotari’s wife and daughter arrested the woman near a local market. Along with some local women, they beat the housewife, cut her hair, smeared ink on her face, and then tied her to an electric pole by the side of a road with a chain of shoes.
Locals called the national emergency service number 999 and informed the police. Police from Palong Model Police Station rescued the woman around 12 noon. She was admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital in an injured condition.
The woman who was beaten told Prothom Alo, “Delwar Kotari has a money transaction with me. He took the money by signing a non-judicial stamp agreement. Whenever I asked him for money, he was making excuses. A week ago, I pressed for money. Then I went to Dhaka with my children. As soon as I returned from Dhaka, Delwar’s wife and daughter beat me up with some locals. They cut my hair, painted my face with ink and tied me up. I will file a case against them.”
Delwar Kotari’s daughter Mousumi Akhter told Prothom Alo, “That woman used to harass my father. She has created trouble in my parents’ family in various ways. She sells drugs in the area. Today, some local women caught her red-handed while selling drugs. Then, angry people in the area beat her up and handed her over to the police. She will not get any money from us. Now she is lying about getting money to hide her misdeeds.”
Palong Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam told Prothom Alo that the victim was having an argument with some local women over money owed to her. As a result, some women beat her up and tied her to a pole. Locals called the national emergency service number 999 to report the incident, and the police rescued her. When the woman became ill, she was admitted to the hospital for treatment. The police will help her if she wants to take legal action.
