The weather across the country, except for Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, is likely to remain generally dry throughout the day today. The temperature is expected to increase slightly compared to the previous few days and sweltering heat is likely to spread due to excess humidity in the air, the Meteorological Department said.
Meanwhile, as the effect of the land low pressure continues to wane, the monsoon activity may increase the rainfall trend across the country from tomorrow. Currently, the land low pressure has weakened and turned into a clear low pressure and is located in Jharkhand and adjacent Bihar areas of India. It may weaken further and merge with the axis of the monsoon. As a result, its direct impact on Bangladesh is unlikely. However, due to the active monsoon, rain may continue in different parts of the country for an extended five days.
The Meteorological Department said that the rainfall trend may decrease slightly on Thursday due to the weakening of the low pressure. However, there may be relatively more rain in some places in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. There is also a possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in other divisions of the country.
As of 7 am today, the capital has received 12 millimeters of rain in the previous 24 hours. And the highest rainfall of 27 millimeters was recorded in Ramgati, Lakshmipur, across the country. As the rainfall trend has decreased, the highest temperature recorded across the country at this time was 35.4 degrees Celsius in Jessore and 34.6 degrees Celsius in the capital, which is slightly higher than the previous few days.
Earlier, for the past few days, various parts of the country have been witnessing rainfall due to the influence of low pressure and active monsoon winds. Heavy rains in Chittagong, in particular, caused waterlogging in various low-lying areas of the city. Chittagong recorded 189 millimeters of rainfall in 24 hours till the morning of August 17, of which 109 millimeters of rain fell in the last three hours.
According to the latest forecast of meteorologists, the monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate in the north Bay of Bengal. The latest update has revealed that this trend of rain and thunderstorms is likely to continue across the country for the next five days or more. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely at some places in the country.
The situation in the Bay of Bengal has become calmer than before as the land depression has weakened. As a result, the local warning signal number 3 issued earlier has been ordered to be lowered at the seaports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra. However, ships are advised to proceed with caution as there may be sudden changes in the weather at sea during the monsoon season.
Temperatures have risen slightly in various parts of the country as rainfall has temporarily decreased, creating sweltering heat during the rain break. However, if the amount of rain increases in the next few days, daytime temperatures may drop slightly.
Meteorologist Toriful Newaz Kabir told Amar Desh that the clear low pressure may weaken and merge with the axis of the monsoon in the next 24 hours. Although the rainfall trend may temporarily decrease across the country today, Thursday, due to the activity of the monsoon, the rainfall trend may increase strongly again across the country between August 21 and 24. People in Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal and Khulna regions have been advised to be extra cautious in the forecast of heavy rain.
