Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Cantonment Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rakibul Islam has been withdrawn.
DC Akhtar Hossain of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Branch confirmed this information on Thursday.
There was a controversy over Rakibul over an audio recording that went viral on social media. Akhtar Hossain said that Rakibul Islam has been attached to the CRO branch of the DMP headquarters for administrative reasons.
In the recently leaked audio recording, OC Rakibul Islam can be heard talking about the return of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country and making various negative comments about the current government and the police force. In the audio, he can be heard saying, “The police on the streets are very weak. If Sheikh Hasina returns in December, they will not be able to do anything.”
He alleged that senior police officials are leaning towards the BNP, while field-level police members are not.
He also spoke about allegations of bribery within the police. He also mentioned promotions in the police in exchange for bribes.
The DMP said that the content of the audio clip will be investigated and action will be taken against the OC if necessary. However, no statement has been received from OC Rakibul regarding the viral audio yet.
