Former minister Dipu Moni, former managing director of Ekattor Media Limited Mozammel Haque Babu and former chief reporter of Ekattor Television Farzana Rupa have been granted one-day interrogation each in a case of crimes against humanity committed in connection with the killings surrounding a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in the capital’s Motijheel.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, issued the order on Sunday. The order said that the three accused will be questioned for one day each within the next 10 days.
The other two members of Tribunal-1 are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The date for submitting the investigation report in the case was set for today. The prosecution (state) requested time to submit the report. The tribunal granted it. The tribunal has set August 10 as the date for submitting the investigation report.
Accused in the case, Dipu Moni, former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque, President of the 1970s Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir, Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Mollah Nazrul Islam, journalists Mozammel Haque Babu and Farzana Rupa were produced before the tribunal today.
During the hearing, senior Supreme Court lawyer ZI Khan Panna said, “Shahriar Kabir is not able to move. He should be given a wheelchair to move around.”
The tribunal granted this application.
Other accused in the case include ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, Benazir Ahmed, and Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H. Sarkar, who are absconding.
Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam said that so far, 58 people have been killed in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Comilla and Chittagong since the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in the capital’s Motijheel in May 2013. He said that they have been able to identify the identities of these 58 people.
