Viral video of child breaking leg made with AI, family claims

The family of a three-month-old baby who was allegedly seen breaking his leg in the Paikardi area of Amdia Union in Sadar Upazila of Narsingdi district has claimed that the video circulating on social media has been edited using AI technology. The police have also made the same claim.

It is learned that the three-month-old son Rijik of Zahirul Mia and Samaya Akter of Paikardi area was undergoing treatment in the hospital for some time after his birth due to various physical complications. During this time, a family dispute arose between Samaya Akter and Lata Begum over household chores.

The family claims that Lata Begum twisted the child’s leg over the dispute on June 11. The incident was captured on a mobile phone, but the video was later edited using AI technology to make it appear that the child’s leg had been broken. It later went viral on social media.

On Tuesday, after receiving information about the incident, Madhavadi police station went to the child’s house and conducted an investigation. Police said they found no evidence that the child’s leg was broken or in plaster.

During police interrogation, the child’s brother Zahirul Mia and mother Saima Akhter said, “The video that went viral on social media was edited with AI. My child did not break any leg. You can see with your own eyes. There is no bandage or plaster on his leg. I had a disagreement with Jan about a family matter. Due to this, he twisted the child’s leg. Jan’s father came to our house and scolded him and the matter was resolved in a family manner.”

Madhabdi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kamal Hossain told Bangladesh Pratidin, they are members of the same family. They do business together, live together. Due to a disagreement with Jaan over household chores, they kicked the child’s leg. Later, they edited it with AI and spread it on social media. The child’s leg is not broken. I have gone to their house. I saw the child. The child’s parents have come to the police station in this regard. They told us that they have no complaint.
