Samsung is bringing a new foldable phone with a wide screen.

South Korean technology giant Samsung is working on a new type of display to strengthen its position in the foldable smartphone market. After the success of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the company is planning to create a new foldable phone with a relatively wide screen to further improve the video viewing experience.

According to a report by tech news outlet Engadget, the commercial success of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is changing Samsung’s plans for future foldable products. According to South Korean news outlet ET News, the new device may use a different display ratio than the conventional Fold series.

The aspect ratio of the display may change.

The new foldable is expected to hit the market in 2027. It is expected to use a more suitable aspect ratio for video content, instead of the 4:3 aspect ratio of the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Tech analysts believe that the display ratio could be closer to 16:9 or 16:10. However, Samsung has not officially said anything about this yet.

The current 4:3 aspect ratio display often results in large black bars at the top and bottom of the screen when watching modern widescreen videos. The company aims to reduce this ‘letterboxing’ issue with the new display design, making the video viewing experience more comfortable.

Five foldables planned for 2027

The ET News report also said that Samsung may have plans to launch a total of five foldable devices by 2027. The possible list includes the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, the next version of the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and the next-generation Galaxy Z Trifold.

Earlier, there were reports that the Trifold device’s production was temporarily halted due to its high price and global RAM shortage. As a result, tech enthusiasts will be keeping an eye on how the new version makes its debut in the market.

Announcement could come in July 2027

The official announcement of the new foldable devices is expected to come at the 2027 Samsung Unpacked event. Considering the company’s recent product launch schedule, the event is likely to take place in July.

Meanwhile, Apple is also preparing to increase competition in the foldable market. Various technology-related sources claim that Apple’s first foldable iPhone may be unveiled with a new series of iPhones in late 2026. As a result, Samsung’s new display plan and Apple’s possible entry into the foldable market – both indicate that competition in this sector will intensify in the coming years.
