Due to continuous rain and torrential rains, the water level in Sunamganj’s rivers is rising rapidly. The Water Development Board is warning of short-term flooding in the next 24 hours.
The water of the Surma River flowing over Sunamganj in the last 24 hours is flowing 27 cm below the danger level. The water of the Chhatak Surma River is flowing 15 cm above the danger level. However, if the rain continues, it may cross the danger level at some points in the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, low-lying areas of various upazilas of the district have started getting flooded. About 100 meters of the Bishwambharpur-Tahirpur road has been submerged under water, causing water to flow over the road.
The Balishri road in Jagannathpur upazila has collapsed, causing floodwaters to enter at least 20 villages including Katia, Alaitali, and Purba Jalalpur. Locals’ homes, agricultural lands, and rural communication systems are under threat. There is also a risk of new river erosion.
Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Emdadul Haque said, “If the upstream hill slopes and continuous rainfall continue, the river water may cross the danger level at several more points in the district within the next 24 hours. As a result, there is a possibility of short-term flooding in the lower areas. We are monitoring the situation around the clock.”
Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Minhazur Rahman said, “A control room has been opened to deal with the floods. 1,311 shelters have been prepared. There is a stock of dry food and pure water.”
