Aftab Uddin, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, has been recalled over the disappearance of one lakh yaba pills recovered from a policeman on his way to Chittagong city from Cox’s Bazar. He was recalled from the police station around 9 pm on Wednesday and attached to the police line.
Confirming the matter, Chittagong City Police Additional Commissioner (Traffic, Administration and Finance) Md. Wahidul Haque Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that the OC of Kotwali Police Station has been withdrawn and sent to the police lines.
Earlier today, a report titled ‘1 lakh yaba missing in OC’s hands’ was published in Prothom Alo. The report revealed that on December 8 last year, 1 lakh yaba was recovered from a policeman in the Baklia area of ​​the city, but a case was not filed by showing it as seized. Rather, the investigation report of the Chittagong City Police mentioned that the yaba consignment was embezzled on the orders of the then OC Aftab Uddin and the carrier was released.
When asked about the allegations, Aftab Uddin told Prothom Alo, “I don’t know anything about Yaba. I didn’t embezzle it. I was at home at the time of the incident.”
Although the police investigation report was sent to the police headquarters on April 29, no visible action was taken against the accused. However, OC Aftab Uddin was recalled after the Prothom Alo report was published.
The investigation report said that Constable Imtiaz Hossain, a gunman of a judge of the Cox’s Bazar District Court, was bringing a luggage filled with one lakh yaba pills to Chittagong on a Dhaka-bound bus. After crossing the Karnaphuli Shah Amanat Bridge, some policemen from Baklia Police Station arrested him. Later, after recovering the yaba pills in the luggage, they took possession of it without taking legal action and released Imtiaz.
The report further states that the then Inspector (Investigation) of Baklia Police Station Tanvir Ahmed, SI Al-Amin Sarkar, SI Amir Hossain, ASI Saddam Hossain and some other police personnel involved in the operation were involved in the incident. It has been recommended to take departmental and criminal action against them.
Constable Imtiaz Hossain was previously suspended in this incident. The latest suspension was on June 9, when then Inspector (Investigation) Tanvir Ahmed was suspended.
The investigation report recommended filing regular cases, recovering the embezzled Yaba, arresting the Yaba supplier Mosharraf, and identifying others involved in the incident. However, more than six months have passed since the incident, no case has been filed so far. The embezzled Yaba has not been recovered either.
