At least 16 kg of gold bars have been seized from inside a fruit crate at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.
The gold was seized in a joint operation by the Directorate General of Defence Intelligence (DGFI) and Dhaka Customs House on Sunday (July 19).
Airport sources said that based on intelligence information, DGFI and Dhaka Customs officials conducted a search at Cargo Village. During this time, gold bars hidden inside fruit cartons were seized. The amount of gold seized was at least 16 kg. Its market value is several crores of taka.
Law enforcement agencies are conducting operations to identify and arrest individuals and members of the smuggling ring involved in the incident. At the same time, an investigation has been launched to identify the real owner of the gold, the source of the shipment, and the entire smuggling network.
The customs authorities concerned said that for the sake of the investigation, detailed information about the operation is not being released at this time. If new information is found in the investigation, it will be announced at a later date.
